Crows Are Better Tool-Makers Than Most Humans

New Caledonia, an island in the South Pacific, is home to a species of crow that manufactures tools in a way seen in almost no other non-human animal. New Caledonian crows don't just use sticks — they shape them. They select specific branches, strip off leaves, trim them to length, and carve hooks at the end for pulling grubs out of tree crevices. Different populations of crows on the island use subtly different tool designs, and researchers have shown that young crows learn these designs from their parents and neighbors. It's cultural transmission — the same mechanism that preserves human technology across generations.

The cognitive benchmarks crows meet are astonishing. In laboratory experiments, New Caledonian crows have solved multi-step puzzles requiring them to use tool A to retrieve tool B to retrieve food. They understand water displacement, dropping stones into a tube until a floating treat rises within reach — a puzzle designed to test five-to-seven-year-old children, which most of those children fail. They remember individual human faces for years and will hold grudges against people who mistreated them, warning other crows in their social circle.

Bird brains are structured completely differently from mammalian ones. They have no neocortex — the mammalian wrinkled outer layer traditionally associated with intelligence. Instead, evolution independently grew a dense cluster called the pallium that performs similar cognitive work with about ten times more neurons per gram of brain tissue. Two entirely separate evolutionary lineages, separated by 300 million years, both invented intelligence.

Which suggests intelligence isn't a special human trick. It's a pattern that keeps emerging wherever it's useful.
